The Review is Westminster College’s biannual alumni magazine. With the school’s rebrand in the Spring of 2017, the magazine needed an overhaul to match. Some of the stand-out elements of the magazine remained the same: stunning photography and great storytelling. My job was to redesign the whole look of the magazine, including the masthead, all fonts, sections, and choose new paper and a new printer.
A lot of the design work I did was to eliminate unnecessary design elements, to make it stand out on its own but still meet brand guidelines, and to deliver a clean and minimalistic look that enhanced the storytelling.

Access and Success Brochure
This brochure was created as a partnership between myself, Westminster’s managing editor, and the Advancement team at Westminster. It’s an example of collaboration between multiple stakeholders and teams creating beautiful products.

I run a side business with an editor and friend, where we help authors self-publish their books. While the editor handles the written word and helps our authors tell their story, I design a book cover that will grab readers’ attention and get them to buy the book. We work with one client at a time, and it’s a long process (eight months to a few years) to get a book from manuscript to the kindle store, and we are happy to partner with writers to get their words out into the world.
"The Summer it Didn't Rain" Book
It’s the summer of 1930, and it hasn’t rained for weeks. Everyone in Joliette, North Dakota, is worried about what the dry and windy weather will mean for farmers and townsfolk alike. But eleven-year-old Emma Moline is determined to have the best summer of her life. She and her cousin Peggy, her very best pal in the whole world, find no shortage of ways to entertain themselves. From the box-supper social to the Hamilton Fair, Joliette is full of opportunities for fun. Not even the meanest girl alive, Miss Aleena LaPage, can keep them from having a good time, and she certainly can’t keep Peggy and Emma from daydreaming about the new boy in town, the handsome Joe Applewood. Emma’s summer seems to be perfect until her papa loses his job and has to leave home to find work. Then her mama falls ill and must leave home to recover at the sanatorium. Emma is sent to live with Mrs. Wittry, a smothering neighbor who can’t let Emma out of her sight. Even worse, Emma has to take a job as a house girl at the LaPage house where Miss Aleena can torture her all day long. But no matter how bad things get, Emma keeps her spirits up. Rain or no rain, Emma vows to save her family.
President Bethami Dobkin, PhD, Inauguration Invite
The invitation for Westminster College’s 19th president inauguration was kind of a puzzle to put together. There were six different mailing lists with different combinations of RSVP cards, four different types of paper, embossing, die cuts, and it all had to be put together by hand to mail. In total, a few thousand pages were printed to make up 900 invitations.
On opening the envelope, the invitee would find an approximately 6x9 packet, wrapped together with a band embossed with the college logo. The first page of the packet was printed in thick vellum, and you could peek through the image of Westminster’s newest president. The next pages included information on the various events happening on campus, RSVP cards (all inserted into a copper page with die cuts to accommodate the reply cards), a business reply envelope, and a campus map.

Westminster College Annual Reports
The Annual Report is another example of a project I was tasked to create based on the new visual brand. This is a publication with a relatively small run: only 700 of Westminster’s donors and stakeholders receive it in the mail. Nonetheless, this report is still one of our office’s biggest projects, and it’s designed as a mini magazine about the state of the college. It includes a couple of articles on how donor money was used throughout the year, and the usual financial information. By choosing paper smartly, and using a horizontal layout instead of vertical, we were able to give a completely new look and feel to the publication, and still keep the budget low.
